A Walk Along the Beach, 11x14 inches oil on canvas panel by Kenney Mencher

I “curate” my subject matter from social media and in this way the models I choose are often pre-chosen by the types of men who my paintings are designed for. However, even though I may be drawn to a specific model, such as this one who is beefy, hairy, and intense looking, I often edit or change drastically the images that are used as the point of departure.

For example, the image that this was based on was a full figure standing on a beach. For me, the most attractive elements of the photograph and of the model were his profile and the line that he shoulder made against the sky. That warm orange against the cool blue gray of the sky that delineated in highlighted his collarbone and arm muscles. Often, I will crop down on a figure and not include both of the shoulders are arms because after all, you can tell with the rest of his physique looks like just from a shoulder and his upper arm and part of his chest. This also allows me to create an asymmetrical composition that creates more visual interest.

I try to increase the physicality of the painting and make it feel more real by thinking about paint texture and the direction of the brushstrokes. The paint is applied in thick layers (artists use the Italian term "impasto" translates to the English word "paste.) The textures of the paint vary across the painting. The background is troweled on with knives and scrapers while the figure's paint texture shows the stiff bristle brushes. The textures of the figures are designed to follow the directions of the muscles and planes of the body.

I work on canvas panel most of the time because it is a more stable surface than stretched canvas and that way the thick paint is less inclined to crack and get damaged.

The subject matter of most of my paintings deals with thicker middle aged me often referred to as bears. I'm trying to represent the beauty of older hyper masculine men who often get overlooked by our more youth oriented culture.

In gay culture, in particular in the gay male subculture, gay bears, more commonly referred to as just a bear, is a larger - and often hairy - bisexual or gay man who is seen to portray or display a form of untamed, rugged, wild masculinity, often with a full beard, chest hair, and a lot of other body hair.

Generically speaking, the term bear is used to describe men who portray the aesthetics of working-class manhood. There is also a strong connotation between bears and the rural LGBT community.

Bear culture is often associated with discovering forms of masculinity, as gay men queer what it means to be masculine through the reputation of being kind, sensitive, and affectionate. As such, the bear subculture has made an important contribution to changing the public perception of the larger gay community, by showing that not all gay men have the same physical appearance - in particular regarding facial and body hair - and that there is no one way of being "mainstream gay." In doing so, the bear movement has also not only contributed to bear identity and gay male culture but to the masculine gender role in general.

Kenney’s pieces are even more amazing in person. The pictures offer a great reference but don’t do the detail of his work and brush strokes justice.

This painting came in the mail today and it is even better in person than the image on Etsy! The well-chosen colors, interesting and perfectly constructed composition, and the great use of brush strokes to define the musculature, all indicate that this painting was made by a master artist. I would be remiss, too, if I did not also thank him for his great service, quick shipping, and all the extras he sent along with the painting, itself. Thank you!

Great communication with the artist regarding the shipping process. When the package arrived I was very impressed with the care taken - the padding shows he values the work as much as I do. Surprised with the extras he slipped in the package - a watercolor study for the diptych, a program detailing his works and history, and several notecards (that will probably end up framed as well). I’m so happy to have found Mencher’s work.
