I like how provocative the subject is. It’s meant to be a little mysterious and a little voyeuristic. I want the viewer to create their own story and I’ve always liked the idea that when someone is taking off a shirt there’s a moment when they are masked. For me the covered face also refers a bit to classical sculptures that have lost the heads and make us focus more on the torso or other parts of the anatomy. I think the sculptor Rodin also liked this as a device for his own work.
Some of the things I’m proud of in this painting have to do with the color. Almost all the color in this painting has a touch of red in it. (Except for the cool or bluish grays.) This is a kind of color formula that the Impressionists use to use called an analogous color scheme.
Speaking technically, analogous colors are three colors next to each other on the color wheel, composed of one dominant color (usually a primary or secondary color), then a supporting color (a secondary or tertiary color), and a third color that is either a mix of the two first colors, or an accent color that pops.
Although the quality of this print is very good please be aware that the quality of the color and tonality can never measure up to an original to an original work of art so please consider this when purchasing this piece.
